There is no other profession that combines the cumulative learning opportunities and the altruistic potential as medicine. The privilege of being able to develop meaningful relationships with patients and help them live healthy, productive lives is a unique and wonderful quality of practicing medicine.

As a pediatrician, I believe I can help give kids the best opportunity to develop and achieve their greatest potential. I have an endless source of energy for that goal. My pursuit has sustained me while I built a large group practice that continues to innovate and successfully adapts to the ever-changing and challenging healthcare marketplace.

I believe it is better to be part of the solution in a complicated healthcare system, one that supports the needs of the public while preserving the authority and autonomy of physicians. The education, experience, and respect of the professional designation creates many opportunities to help evolve this essential service for our society.

It is important for physicians to be involved in their communities and to strengthen the credibility and effectiveness of their endeavors as well as the overall practice of medicine.

I would encourage any young person interested in making the commitment to become a physician. No other career can provide so many types of spiritual and material rewards.

Russell Libby, MD, is a pediatrician who practices in Fairfax, Va.
