3 billing codes physicians should use

With all the useful information available on Physicians Practice, it is easy to become overwhelmed.

With this in mind, the tip of the week is a chance to reflect on some of the wisdom found all across the site.

In a July 2021 story on 3 billing codes physicians should use, Michael Enos, CPC, CPMA writes the following:

1). 99441-99443: Telephone services

- Doctors’ offices are busy places, and it isn’t unusual for patients to call in asking to speak with the doctor. CPT offers codes to report telephone services provided by a physician or other qualified health care professional who may report evaluation and management (E/M) services.

2). 99058: Services provided on an emergency basis

- When a patient is seen on a emergency basis and it disrupts the flow of the office you may be able to bill this code.

3). 96160: Health risk assessment

- Providers can bill code 96160 when they perform a health risk assessment with a patient or caregiver/guardian in order to assess the risk of conditions such as mental disorder
