7 Ways to Write Killer Call-to-Actions

7 Ways to Write Killer Calls to Action

What’s the most important part of your content?
It could be your call to action.

A call to action does more than just direct your readers toward a certain action – it can also help you make more sales, increase reader engagement and produce more conversions.

If you’ve been struggling to write great calls to action, take a look at these tips.

7 Ways to Write Killer Call-to-Actions

1. Use command verbs

Nobody wants a warm-water CTA. Iffy CTAs don’t produce responses and they make your entire post feel weak and wishy-washy. In order to avoid this, don’t beat around the bush with your CTAs. Instead, start them off by being direct and straightforward. This is especially important due to the fact that CTAs are short by nature, which means that you don’t have a great deal of space to get your point across. That said, if you run an eCommerce site, try using words like ‘Shop’ or ‘Buy’ at the beginning of your CTA. If you’re trying to get users to tap into your content, use words like ‘Download’ or ‘Subscribe.’ If you’re trying to introduce readers to your sales funnel, start with words like ‘Find out more…’ or ‘learn more…’ People respond to strong, actionable language and these phrases and words leave no questions about what you want your readers to do. As such, they’re effective and to the point.

2. Use emotive words

Want your readers to be excited about your CTA? Well, you’re going to have to give them a reason. With this in mind, use words and phrases that make your audience feel enthusiastic. Creating a sense of urgency is a great way to do this. That said, anything with ‘Buy now!’ or ‘Act fast…” is a winner. You can also provoke enthusiasm by offering a discount, like 50 percent or something similar. To add a little extra excitement, consider adding an exclamation point (but only one, because any more than one make you seem like a schoolgirl with a crush, and we don’t want that). Emotive words are a powerful way to make your readers feel excitement and lend authenticity to your CTA.

3. Give your audience a good reason

Why should people click? If you can’t answer that, you’re in trouble from the get-go. What will clicking your CTA do for them? Will it help them save money? Lose weight? Be more productive? Get a great value? Whatever the benefit of your CTA is, you’ll need to clearly outline that in order to produce the desired response from your readers. This involves playing up your unique selling proposition (USP).

A USP is essentially the thing that makes readers want to click your CTA rather than your competitor’s and it is arguably one of the most important aspects of the entire CTA. To write a great CTA with the USP in mind, you’ll have to do two things: tell the user what you want them to do (‘click now,’ for example) and tell them what they’ll get when they do (‘for 50 percent off our newest product’). The combination of these two things makes for a great CTA every time.

4. Play up the FOMO

FOMO (fear of missing out) is a powerful driving factor for people choosing whether to click a CTA. Although it’s become a modern-day buzzword, FOMO is actually rooted in science. FOMO is the feeling that a person is missing out on something great or exciting and, when applied to a marketing tactic, can cause people to leap at an offer or make a purchasing decision.

One of the best ways to leverage the power of FOMO in your CTAs is to give your customers the impression that they’re going to miss an opportunity if they don’t act fast. This may mean advertising the quantity left for a certain product or offering a clock that ticks down toward the end of a sale or promotional offer.

To put a unique spin on the power of FOMO, consider presenting customer reviews that help customers see the value of your product, good or service and then make the service scarce with phrases like ‘Only X Seats Left!’ or ‘Buy now! Sale ends Thursday!’ Making anything time-sensitive and scarce increases its value hugely. This phenomena is known as the “science of scarcity,” which essentially means that people value a thing more when it’s scarce than they do when it’s abundant.

5. Master the devices

Right now, 51 percent of shoppers are using their mobile phone to browse online and you can bet that they’re looking for instant gratification. With that in mind, make sure that you’re optimizing your CTA for mobile platforms. To do this, take advantage of the fact that Google allows users to set mobile preferences for ads and that companies can display a phone number alongside ads. This is important for making your CTAs effective for mobile users and will greatly increase the effectiveness of your CTAs.

6. Use numbers

Numbers are appealing to the human eye and, when presented with a series of numbers that represent pricing, discounts, incentives or time left, people respond more quickly and more strongly. That said, write ‘50%’ instead of ‘fifty percent.’ This simple trick will make your promotions more effective and will help people respond to them more quickly.

7. Use unique language

This is solely for the purpose of grabbing attention and letting your character shine in a CTA. Instead of saying ‘Click here for help with SEO’ try writing something like ‘Your SEO game sucks. Click here for help.’ The second CTA has much more character than the first and will stand out to people more.

CTAs are an important part of an effective blog post. In order to make them work well for you, follow these seven tips to simplify your CTA formula and reach your customers throughout your entire marketing career.

Facebook Denies Listening in On Your Smartphone’s Microphone to Eavesdrop

facebook-140903_1280
Facebook is refuting allegations that it listens in on your conversations in a bid to serve up relevant ads.

The social networking firm has released a statement to address a report from The Independent that accused Facebook of eavesdropping on its mobile-using members. The article was based on the opinions of a University of South Florida communications professor who said Facebook often serves up ads with topics similar to what she has talked about near her phone. She told the publication she would not be surprised if Facebook did, in fact, carry out such a practice.

The social media firm reacted quickly to the allegation with a post on its news page.

“Facebook does not use your phone’s microphone to inform ads or to change what you see in News Feed. Some recent articles have suggested that we must be listening to people’s conversations in order to show them relevant ads. This is not true. We show ads based on people’s interests and other profile information – not what you’re talking out loud about,” the post reads.

“We only access your microphone if you have given our app permission and if you are actively using a specific feature that requires audio. This might include recording a video or using an optional feature we introduced two years ago to include music or other audio in your status updates.”
For those who are paranoid about Facebook listening in to their conversations when they are on or near their Smartphones, there is a simple solution: simply disable the ability under Settings.
If you use iOS, tap on Facebook under Settings and then simply turn the microphone off. For Android, click on Apps under the settings menu, tap on Facebook and then choose permissions. From there you can turn off your mic.

How Facebook Live Could Save Your Business

How Facebook Live Could Save Your Business

Facebook live video 2
Seth Godin once said, “Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but the stories you tell.” In a nutshell, that is the Herculean task every online business now faces.

In today’s digital marketing environment, stories have become the foundation of a successful marketing campaign. You need to engage users on a personal level and on an emotional front. More than ever, your brand needs to be humanized for people to connect and care.

This is, in part, why live streaming video is becoming wildly popular. Platforms like Blab, Periscope and others have given online users a way to connect face-to-face and in real-time, which provides as intimate of a setting as you can get online. And brands are catching on to the appeal

Like wildfire, everyone from GM to Taco Bell is joining one live streaming site or another to help push their brand to new heights of engagement, loyalty, visibility, and connection with consumers. For a brand that is currently floundering, live streaming video might be your best bet at a second shot. And the best site to accomplish this on is Facebook.

Since Facebook Live was recently rolled out to the general public, the feature has become a massive hit due to its simplicity and integration with the Mentions app. People on the platform have been eating up video content as the social behemoth recently announced that its users are consuming more than 100 million hours per day.

As a small business, you are already working with limited funds, have smaller social followings and are likely not capable of reaching as far as your strongest competitor. It’s for these reasons, and many more, that you need to turn your social following into a full-scale community. You need to engage your followers on a more personal level than the larger entities. You must tell stories that inspire, cultivate real relationships and transform customers into deeply devoted advocates for your company.
You can do all that and more with Facebook Live. Here is how this new little tool can save your business:

The Power of Live Video

Video is currently in the same transitional phase that mobile was a few years back until it finally toppled desktops when it comes to search volume. In a mere three years from now, it is predicted that video will account for the vast majority of all online traffic. And this is likely to come to fruition as nearly every social media channel, housing anywhere from hundreds of millions to more than a billion users, adopts a live streaming or video feature of their own.

With Facebook, the largest and most ubiquitous social network to ever exist, you have the power to reach the vast majority (if not all) of your followers without having to drive traffic to some external source. Through that you can hold various Q&A sessions, promotions, behind the scenes looks, and a variety of other content through live video. Facebook, unlike any other platform, allows you to take these interactions even deeper with live streaming to Group and Event pages. This can create an even more personal setting for individuals because you are not simply blasting out a live video to all of your followers; you are engaging a smaller group of individuals who are highly interested in a certain topic or affair. And in that setting, you can develop profoundly intimate connections with the audience, tell meaningful stories, and really expose yourself and your business as you truly see it. As you begin to open up and connect with people, they will become increasingly attached to you and your brand. And this heart-felt bond is what will allow you to create a community of advocates for your brand.

The Power of Advocacy and Word-of-Mouth

You may have heard of advocacy marketing before. Influitive, one of the leaders in the field, defines an advocate this way:

Advocates are not just satisfied customers. They are enthusiasts who embrace your company’s vision and willingly advance your interests through their interaction with others. Whether by sharing experiences online, referring new business, or recommending your products, these supporters have enormous influence on your brand, demand generation, and pipeline efforts.”

And this is what Facebook Live can achieve for you. While your business may not have the funds to employ services like those that Influitive provides, you can nonetheless convert customers of your business into social promoters of your company.

Word-of-mouth advertising is the most persuasive form of marketing you can generate because consumers no longer trust brand messaging. By connecting with your audience on a personal level, you take a step away from people seeing you as a faceless business and, instead, view you as a person trying to run an organization. Granted that you have a great product and stellar customer service, you can confidently ask these folks in live chats to share your pages and content, write a review, and express their thoughts about your offerings to their audience. Incentivizing folks to share doesn’t hurt either. Do this by providing special offers, discounts, and so forth. Highlight customer reviews and experiences with your Facebook Live viewers. Show your audience just how much they mean to you and they are far more likely to reciprocate.

This is how you begin to breathe new life into your business. Connect deeply with your following, no matter how small, and incentivize them to share the gospel of your business to friends and family. The more you connect with your audience through live video, give shout-outs to people, answer questions, and interact on a human level, the more people will love you for it, tell their friends, and bring outsiders into the fold of the community that will in turn, do the same. And that’s how a grassroots powerhouse company is born.

Twitter, Yahoo Explore Merger Possibility: Report

Screen Shot 2016-06-03 at 10.38.03 AM
Struggling microblogging network Twitter is reportedly investigating the merit of a merger with Yahoo, according to the New York Post.

At least it was. Sources told the publication Twitter executives met with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and her management team to look over the Internet giant’s financials to see if a merger might make sense.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, however, did not attend the meeting, leading to speculation that the social networking firm is not serious about such a partnership.

“When your CEO doesn’t show up for a management meeting, you have to wonder how serious it was,” one source told the Post, adding that Twitter’s interest wasn’t driven by “some huge thesis — it was a flyer.”
Still, the idea is not as crazy as it sounds. Another source explained that it could indeed be beneficial if the financing was there.

“Twitter is the destination for instant news, and Yahoo has a lot of eyeballs on its site,” the source said. “The idea isn’t as crazy as you might think.”

Yahoo officials declined to comment other than the usual response: “We don’t comment on rumor and speculation.”

Mayer, in an April conference call with investors, said she and her management team have made the sale a “top priority” and added that there has been a “high level of interest” from first-round bidders, who are “some of the most well-known and respected names in the industry.”

Verizon is thought to be the front-runner for Yahoo, but other large companies thought to be in the running include Microsoft, IAC, CBS, The Daily Mail and Time, to name a few.

Mayer, at the beginning of February, announced her new plan for the company, which included the spin off of Yahoo’s core Web business — including the Yahoo and Tumblr websites. As part of the move, Yahoo’s Internet unit becomes a separate, publicly traded company.

Mobile-Search Optimization Now in Full Effect

mobile-698624_640

If you identify as a writer, digital marketer, or SEO expert, it’s likely that you’re at least moderately familiar with the importance of mobile optimization. Last year, mobile search numbers surpassed desktop search numbers for the first time in history and there’s no sign this trend will reverse. Because of this, companies have been placing increased focus on mobile compatibility over the last several years – a trend that also shows no sign of stopping. In fact, mobile-search optimization is so critically important that Google rolled-out a huge update aimed at strengthened its mobile ranking signals earlier this month. Read on to learn more.

Why Mobile Search Matters

As it stands right now, 90 percent of American adults own Smartphones, and the average person checks his or her phone 221 times each day. What’s more, 60 percent of all time spent on social media is initiated from mobile platforms, and a whopping 38 percent of Facebook users are mobile-only. Because of this, sites that aren’t optimized for mobile search are missing out on a huge amount of traffic, conversions and qualified leads.

Google Updates Mobile-Search

On March 16 of this year, Google’s team of webmasters announced that the search engine would begin to roll out an update meant to increase the importance of the ranking signal associated with mobile-search optimization. According to their initial press release, it intended to do this by early May of 2016.

On the 12th of this month, John Mueller, the Webmaster trends analyst at Google, announced via Twitter that the aforementioned changes had been entirely rolled-out and are now in full effect.

What These Changes Mean

In the search engine’s initial press release back in March, Google made it clear that sites which had already gone mobile-friendly wouldn’t be impacted by the update. Google also recommended that sites that weren’t sure about their level of mobile accommodation use the Google Mobile-Friendly Test or Webmaster Mobile Guide to audit their sites. Finally, the search engine stressed that search query intent is still one of the strongest ranking signals, so it is possible for a page featuring lots of unique, original content to rank well even if it’s not optimized for mobile.

5 Ways to Make Your Site More Mobile-Friendly

If your site isn’t already mobile-friendly, it’s time to get thee to the computer. Because this update is already fully rolled-out, it will harm the standing of your site unless you act quickly. Here are a few of the best ways to make sure your site is mobile-friendly, starting now:

1. Implement responsive Web design

While some businesses try to make their sites more mobile-friendly by using mobile-only and desktop-only designs for their respective mobile and desktop sites, this approach often results in a poor user experience and small army of expensive, difficult to manage URLs. Because of this, responsive design is a better option.

Created to help websites function better for users on all devices, including desktop computers, mobile phones and tablets, responsive design allows a website to understand which device is being used to view it and then adapt accordingly. With responsive design, mobile users can access social sharing buttons from mobile platforms, easily read content on all devices, access every page of your site, and engage with promotions just like they would from a desktop computer. This, in turn, helps make your site friendlier to mobile users and can cut down on the frustration that mobile-only users often feel when interacting with websites.

2. Publish high-quality content

One of the things that Google prizes most is high-quality, unique content. It’s likely that this ranking factor will remain strong no matter what else happens in the world of SEO. Because of this, it’s critical to focus on creating reputable content while also improving the mobile responsiveness of your site. While it’s critical to ensure that your site is optimized for mobile search as much as possible, it’s also important to ensure that you’re not losing sight of your content creation efforts in the process. When taken together, mobile optimization and quality content combine to form the ultimate SEO strategy.

3. Evaluate your site regularly

Google often A/B tests things before it fully rolls them out, so it’s wise to keep checking back with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool to ensure that your site is still on the cutting edge of mobile optimization. In addition to helping you hone in on anything you need to change, the mobile-friendly test tool will also give you a heads up about what you need to fix before it has a chance to do severe damage to your site.

4. Include high-resolution images

On a tiny screen, high-resolution images make all the difference. By including high-resolution images on your website, you can improve your user experience while also streamlining mobile load times and helping yourself rank higher in SERPs.

5. Test, test, test

Mobile benchmarks are always changing, so it’s critical for you to test your mobile site often. Ideally, you should access your site on Android, Windows and iPhone and from different tablets to be sure that it performs well from every device. Additionally, you’ll need to test every one of your pages, buttons, promotions and social sharing options.

As you test your site, be sure to place yourself in the user’s shoes and identify weak points for later reference. While this may seem like a simple step, it’s a critical step to ensuring your site is as mobile-friendly and streamlined as possible.

The Future of Mobile Search: SEO and Mobile Optimization go Hand-in-Hand

As Google’s recent prioritizing of the mobile search ranking signal proves, mobile search is only becoming more important with time. Within the next few years, SEOs and marketers will see an enhanced focus on mobile optimization, mobile traffic will continue to grow, and mobile optimization will become synonymous with good SEO. With this in mind, companies need to start preparing right now. By ensuring that your site is as mobile-friendly as it can possibly be, you provide a better user experience and position yourself for success with both SEO and mobile search.

11 Hacks to Improve Your SEO Through Social Media

SEO-Tips
Search engine optimization is often focused around what you can do on your actual homepage to rank well. Most search engines are a lot more complicated than that. They look for things like traffic, link sharing and social media activity to help your homepage rank.

If you’ve been putting off using social media, no matter what type of business you’re in, you could be missing out on some great search engine optimization that can help your website rank higher.
Here are 11 ways you can use social media to help with SEO.

Direct Links Matter

Search engines are a lot smarter today than they were when SEO was becoming a big buzz word 10 years ago. No longer do search engines just look at the website, they look at the activity happening around the Web – including social media. Every link you share on social media will affect your SEO. Although most social links are no-follow, search engines still use those links to find new content on the Web.

Grow Indirect Content Links

When you share links on social media, it gives people an opportunity to find your content. When they find your content, assuming they like it, they might link it on their website. When you share cool content, it’s a no brainer that others would want to tell people about it on their platform. This is a great way to gain backlinks indirectly from social media.

Make Sharable Content

If your content isn’t sharable, you’re doing it wrong. Anything you write, any photographs, or infographics you create – even your tweets – should be good enough that people want to share it. It needs to be interesting, informative and bite-sized. If you create this content and link it back to your site, it will help with SEO. Not sure what to share? Here are 10 ways anyone can win at social media.

Social Content Ranks in Search Engines

Social media sites have a high page authority. Any content you create and share on social media is likely to show up in search engines when that topic is searched. This indirectly benefits you if the content links back to your site. It also benefits you in that it will help grow your followers. The more your content appears in search engines, even if it’s just on your social page, it indirectly creates interest in your content and grows SEO.

Create Profiles to Rank in Search Engines

With social media sites being so high ranking, social media profiles are often near the top of search results. This is another way social media is influencing business. Make sure your website links to your social profile, and your social profile links to your site. Use Schema.org to make sure your markup allows search engines to tie in your social profiles to your website. By linking them all together, when people are just Googling for you, more of your company pages and social profiles are likely to show up.

People Search on Social

Users aren’t just searching on Google or Bing for the latest data – they’re also searching on social media. If you’re tackling your keywords and topics on social media, this can be an advantage for your website SEO. When information is popular for certain topics on social media, search engines take notice. It’s important that search optimization is done not only for Google and Bing but for all the social platforms you’re involved in. This is all part of your content strategy. Make sure your social content matches your Web content.

Make Your Site Social Friendly

Allow people to easily share links. If you’re not sure how to create them, here’s a cheat sheet that can help. If people like something, they don’t mind clicking a like button. You just have to make sure it’s there. Don’t go crazy and add 30 buttons to the site, but pick the biggest platforms that are relevant to your target demographic and allow people to submit your links to social sites. This will help for all the reasons mentioned previously.

Watch Your Social Analytics

It’ll tell you what you’re doing right and doing wrong and will show you what content is being shared and what is falling flat. It’ll help you avoid social media mistakes that can kill your reputation and help you create more relevant content. If you’re able to tell why people are connecting with people on social platforms, it will allow you to make your website SEO just that much better. You can never have too much info when it comes to SEO.

Followers Are Built in Audience

Traffic volume matters. Every time to you make a social post, the more people you have following, the more traffic you’ll generate. It’s not just that immediate traffic, but the residual traffic as well. Your followers will share your content (if it’s good) and link to it on their own sites. Grow this built in audience, and then use it to tackle topics and it’ll give your website SEO a boost.

Community Posts

Local communities are a great way to boost shares and likes. Talking about those in a local community, local community groups and promoting local events will help your social media grow. The bigger your social media following, the more all the above tips and tricks will help your SEO. People also search locally for many things. Simply being local can really help within that community. It can be as minor as just giving a shout-out to a community festival – even if your business is not in that town.

Brand Awareness

Beyond just the hacks for using social media to improve SEO, just growing social media will help your brand awareness. This can really help in SEO over the long term. The more people that know your brand will talk about your brand, share your links, and grow your brand awareness. This cycle continues and is a big part of organic growth.

When looking at how social media can help your SEO, it’s important to look past the direct benefits and look at the residual ones of just being on the platforms. They don’t live in a vacuum. Any growth achieved will translate over to actual visitors, and links will be shared or posted to other platforms organically.

The main thing is to just get started. Anything you do or create, just start posting it and see where you’ll end up. The results to SEO may take a little longer, but they’re worth it.

Facebook Ads Will Now Target Non-Members on Third-Party Sites

facebook

Facebook wants to dominate advertising on the Internet.

The social network has revealed it will begin showing ads to non-members across the Web. Until now, only Facebook users could see advertising from the social network on third-party websites or apps courtesy of Facebook’s Audience Network.

Facebook ads and business platform vice-president Andrew Bosworth, in a blog post, said Facebook will now help publishers’ and marketers’ ads be visible to anyone who visits websites and applications that are part of its ad network.

Although it may not seem like a big deal, as the Wall Street Journal points out, it could mean Facebook will soon be able to sell and place a significantly higher number of video and display ads across the Web.

“Publishers and app developers have some users who aren’t Facebook users,” Bosworth told the Wall Street Journal. “We think we can do a better job powering those ads.”

According to the report, Facebook will use cookie tracking combined with its buttons and plugins as well as other data to detect non-members on the third-party websites. From there, Facebook will get fancy with ad targeting, using algorithmic patterns to guess what types of ads particular Web surfers would be interested in seeing.

Bosworth, in his blog post, said all ads will be reviewed against Facebook’s standards to “ensure they are as respectful of people’s experience as possible.”

“For example, we don’t permit ads that include sound unless you interact with them and we prohibit deceptive ads and ads for unsafe products and services. We’ve developed technology to determine when someone clicks on an ad on a mobile device by accident, so you don’t get taken to a website or app you didn’t mean to visit,” he wrote.

“We also offer everyone controls over the ads they see, including tools to opt out of online interest-based advertising. If you have an account, you can do this directly from your Facebook settings, and we honor your choice wherever you use Facebook.”
