How to Get Traffic From Social Bookmarking Sites

highway traffic

Getting top spot on social bookmarking sites is a cost effective and easy way to attract traffic to your site. Some of the bookmarking websites include stumbleupon.com, reddit.com and dig.com, among others. Appearing at the top of these sites is not as difficult as it appears. Here is a list of steps you can take to rank at the top of bookmarking websites and, thus, increase traffic to your site.

Mind Your Headlines
There are many well-written articles that go unnoticed on the crowded Web. The simple explanation is the headlines are not catchy. A reader will first be attracted to your headline before reading the content of your article. Without a catchy headline, the chances of digging deeper into the article are limited. Seek to provide answers and create headlines that have the reader’s perspective in mind.

Short And Meaningful Descriptions
The description for your content should be short and factual. Anything longer than 100-150 words will be boring. It should draw the attention of the reader to the content of the article. However, be sure to avoid exaggerations that will only make your work appear phony. The description should be a writing masterpiece to usher the reader into the rest of the content.

What’s On The First Paragraph?
This rule applies to all types of writing. For social bookmarking sites, it is more important. You might capture the attention of your reader with a great heading and winning description, but fail on the basis of the first paragraph. The expectations created by the headline and description should be continued in the first paragraph. This will keep the visitor glued to your site.

Do Not Exchange Your Content For Bookmarking Techniques
The content you provide to your reader should flow with the heading, description and first paragraph. The idea is to maintain the attention and also deliver the promise made at introduction. Bookmarking low quality content is useless. This will affect your ability to capture repeat traffic.

Let Others Bookmark Your Site
There is greater value when other people bookmark your classified sites or blogs. To reap maximum benefits from this act, make it easier for them to do it. This is done by providing a bookmarking button strategically at the end of your article. There are different options for CMA and HTML users. Whichever platform you are using, ensure that sharing is done in a seamless manner.

When and Where to Submit
Learn the behavior of your audience and know when to make the top page move. The ranking cycle is only 24 hours. This means that a few minutes will make a great deal of a difference. To navigate through this barrier, ensure that you make the submission at a time when traffic to your site would be at its maximum.

There are different categories on social bookmarking sites. Submitting in the wrong category only reduces your chances of getting attention. In other cases, there are no perfect categories. This leaves your ranking to chance, so find the category in which your site perfectly fits.

Build an Attractive Profile
Social bookmarking sites give preference to seasoned users who have sustained high-quality articles. The secret is to post links to interesting articles. Your site should also have links to other sites. The bookmarking sites consider single-linked sites to be self promoting and thus do not accord them much attention.

How Money Changes The Way We Think and Behave

The term "affluenza" -- a portmanteau of affluence and influenza, defined as a "painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety, and waste, resulting from the dogged pursuit of more" -- is often dismissed as a silly buzzword created to express our cultural disdain for consumerism. Though often used in jest, the term may have more truth than many of us would like to think.

Affluenza was even used as a defense in a recent, highly publicized drunk driving trial in Texas, where a 16-year-old boy claimed that his family's wealth should exempt him from responsibility for the deaths of four people. The boy got off with 10 years' probation and therapy (which his family will pay for), angering many for what they saw as the law's unfair leniency.
Psychologist G. Dick Miller, who acted as an expert witness for the defense, argued that the boy was suffering from affluenza, which may have kept him from comprehending the full consequence of his actions.

“I wish I had not used that term,” Miller later told CNN. “Everyone seems to have hooked on to it.”
Whether affluenza is real or imagined, money really does change everything, as the song goes -- and those of high social class do tend to see themselves much differently than others. Wealth (and the pursuit of it) has been linked with immoral behavior -- and not just in movies like The Wolf of Wall Street. Psychologists who study the impact of wealth and inequality on human behavior have found that money can powerfully influence our thoughts and actions in ways that we're often not aware of, no matter our economic circumstances. Although wealth is certainly subjective, most of the current research measures wealth on scales of income, job status or measures of socioeconomic circumstances, like educational attainment and intergenerational wealth.

Here are seven things you should know about the psychology of money and wealth.

More money, less empathy?

monopoly game

Several studies have shown that wealth may be at odds with empathy and compassion. Research published in the journal Psychological Science also found that people of lower economic status were better at reading others' facial expressions -- an important marker of empathy -- than wealthier people.

“A lot of what we see is a baseline orientation for the lower class to be more empathetic and the upper class to be less [so],” study co-author Michael Kraus told TIME. “Lower-class environments are much different from upper-class environments. Lower-class individuals have to respond chronically to a number of vulnerabilities and social threats. You really need to depend on others so they will tell you if a social threat or opportunity is coming and that makes you more perceptive of emotions.”

While a lack of resources fosters greater emotional intelligence, having more resources can cause bad behavior in its own right. University of Berkeley research found that even fake money could make people behave with less regard for others. Researchers observed that when two students played monopoly, one having been given a great deal more Monopoly money than the other, the wealthier player expressed initial discomfort, but then went on to act aggressively, taking up more space and moving his pieces more loudly, and even taunts the player with less money.

Wealth can cloud moral judgment.

morality

It is no surprise in this post-2008 world to learn that wealth may cause a sense of moral entitlement. A UC Berkeley study found that in San Francisco -- where the law requires that cars stop at crosswalks for pedestrians to pass -- drivers of luxury cars were four times less likely than those in less expensive vehicles to stop and allow pedestrians the right of way. They were also more likely to cut off other drivers.

Another study suggested that merely thinking about money could lead to unethical behavior. Researchers from Harvard and the University of Utah found that study participants were more likely to lie or behave immorally after being exposed to money-related words.

“Even if we are well intentioned, even if we think we know right from wrong, there may be factors influencing our decisions and behaviors that we’re not aware of,” University of Utah associate management professor Kristin Smith-Crowe, one of the study's co-authors, told MarketWatch.

Wealth has been linked with addiction.

alcoholism

While money itself doesn't cause addiction or substance abuse, wealth has been linked with a higher susceptibility to addiction problems. A number of studies have found that affluent children are more vulnerable to substance abuse issues, potentially because of high pressure to achieve and isolation from parents. Studies also found that kids who come from wealthy parents aren't necessary exempt from adjustment problems -- in fact, research found that on several measures of maladjustment, high school studies of high socioeconomic status received higher scores than inner-city students. Researchers found that these children may be more likely to internalize problems, which has been linked with substance abuse.

But it's not just adolescents: Even in adulthood, the rich outdrink the poor by more than 27 percent.

Roadblocks to Your Google Rankings: A Detailed Analysis

SEO Targeting

Every website is optimistic about its framework, SEO and even content. But sadly, the first position in Google’s SERPs is elusive to most of them, with a very few reaching even the first page.
For a business to start and grow, the website needs to be created, initialized and then indexed by Google. Once the search engine starts crawling, it isn’t luck but proper skills that will see you through. Even after hiring the biggest SEO firms, fantastic Web designers and other professionals, we might often find companies, falling behind in pages and thus rankings. If you knew what to fix, things would certainly have been easier. Google changes its algorithms constantly and, thus, a predefined approach won’t really work.

image1

I have had similar experiences in the past until the ranking demons were finally busted. It isn’t that my website is always on the top, but I rarely fall below the third spot. Here I have enumerated a few missteps that some webmasters and owners are still making when trying to beef up the traffic and hence, go up the ranks. Avoid these and you are pretty much on your way.

But before starting off, I would like to shed some light on how Google works with our websites, pages, links and, certainly, rankings. In simple terms, Google is inclined to help the general user. The websites that are of value to the audience, boast of regularly updated content and offer relevant information, get the needed traction.

The following are the obnoxious elements likely hindering your Google rankings growth. Fix these and the results will, certainly, be extraordinary.

Duplication is a SIN
Useful content is original, relevant and definitely not duplicated. Google has an eye for detail and it looks at blog pieces and even minor strands of plagiarized content. Penalties are therefore pretty big and proactive. Quality must be maintained at all times. However, some websites have landing pages and product pages that often have similar content, mainly due to the orientation. Google might still consider this a fraudulent approach unless we make use of ‘Canonical’ URLs for the cause. This would tell Google that the copied content is for a definite cause and certainly not for stacking the pages, against the SEO norms. Again the original draft can always be checked, via Copyscape to determine the authenticity of the piece.

‘Thin Content’ and Penalties
I recently saw a friend of mine getting heavily penalized by Google and the cited reason was thin content. One must know that content that lacks quality is no better than the copied one. A few years’ back Google prioritized link building but the present scenario, with the recent Panda Update has shifted the entire balance in favor of content. For someone who is thinking about in-depth content that is well served and detailed, Google is definitely an ally. The best way to stay ahead is to think about the audience first and then about the rankings. One must always try to make the website relevant to the cause, with the content being the stand-out performer.

Neglecting the First Human, Second Search Engine Plan
We all must target specific keywords, before trying to be indexed. These keywords are important because Google will be able to determine the relevance of your content. However, in the past, over-optimization of anchor text made Google quite skeptical regarding the inclusion of keywords in the article. Black hat SEO made use of keyword inclusion and the term ‘stuffing’ came into existence. However, the present scenario is exactly opposite — Google now prefers content creation with just the right amount of keywords in it, just for installing relevance.

Dodgy Backlinks
Backlinks are still sacred when it comes to search rankings. Google can easily assess the relevance of your content by seeing the number of backlinks it has. For Google, backlinks are endorsements that go down well but only via the trusted sources. This technique was also abused in the form of rampaging guest blogging, directory submissions, spam comments and what not. I cannot describe all of these as abusive, but the inclination toward SERPS and not the users, is what makes these look bad. Bad directories are avoided these days. The website needs to work harder to get backlinks by creating premium content. If the quality is high, editors would include your work in their directories, offering backlinks for the valuable addition. Guest blogging has been at the forefront of link building for a long time but, with some websites being of low quality, Google opted to post some stringent changes in this regard. For guest posts to be accepted by domains with high authority; exceptional write-ups must be drafted.

Page Titles are Often Non-Optimized
Balancing plays an important role in SEO. Keywords need to be used with precision without going over-board. Google gives a lot of importance to the page titles because these suggest the relevance and value of the posted content. Hence, it would be logical to optimize the title with the most important or core keyword. This will improve rankings and even increase the CTRs because higher relevance will be justified. Some researchers at Searchmetrics suggest that page titles might be losing relevance, ever so slightly. The ranking impact might go down a tad, but these are still your best bets for higher ‘click through rates.’

Insecurity is a Factor
Site security is now a ranking factor. Sites beginning with https://, steal the show because visitors can be tracked and, thus, Google can determine relevance and hence, rankings. This builds on to the traffic referral data. And, of course, safer sites go down well with customers because they can rely on them for content and subscriptions.

Accidental No-Indexing
Some websites keep themselves hidden unless they are ready to go live. The No-Follow Tags are, therefore, implemented in the form of small codes like robot.txt. If the codes aren’t removed in a timely fashion, Google won’t be able to crawl your website.

Pathetic User Experience
Search rankings do have an impact but what sells is the user experience. If the website created and ranked isn’t upgrading itself, then customers will visit and leave without reading or even subscribing. Bounce rates will be high and this isn’t what Google favors. Google tracks signals, one of which is the amount of time visitors spend on a site. Some of the factors that determine the user experience include ease of navigation, faster loading speeds and mobile responsivity to name a few. The companies need to look at the entire perspective as a visitor and implement changes, accordingly.

Bad Agencies Pull you Down
There are too many charlatans out there that offer a lot but often fail to deliver. Some SEO agencies still go by the black hat techniques because they aren’t well informed. We have seen firms putting up tags like, ‘Guaranteed First Page’ but the experienced individuals know that with Google nothing is guaranteed. Hence, selecting the agency is important. Check out and agency’s testimonials and tangible results before making a commitment.

How To Escalate Sales With Facebook’s New Tools

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg giving his F8 Keynote.

Just about everyone understands how powerful Facebook can be for extending their business’ reach and adding to its bottom line. The platform is the frontrunner of all social networks in terms of active accounts, traffic, and most everything else. Just a few months ago, more than one billion people logged onto Facebook in a 24-hour period and with more than 1.5 billion active monthly users, Facebook is a flat-out Phenom in the social arena.

If you are the operator of one of the 40 million small businesses tha
t use Facebook Pages, there are some exciting new tools that just made it easier to connect with audiences and increase conversions. No matter if your storefront is brick and mortar, digital, or both, these new offerings can make a serious impact.

New CTAs for Engagement

Calls-to-action are of massive importance in driving engagement and sales. In a recent blog post, Facebook unveiled plans to optimize the mobile experience in a way that helps integrate the goals of your business more closely with your social following. The new CTAs are located directly below the cover photo and include:
  • Book now
  • Watch Video
  • Contact Us
  • And more
The best part of these new CTAs is that you get to decide which pages they link to; on or off of Facebook. This allows the consumer experience to go much deeper than simply liking and interacting with your brand on social. Now businesses can guide users on what they should do next, much like guiding a person through the conversion funnel.

Purchasing Power
In addition to the new CTAs, Facebook has added a ‘Shopping’ tab that allows brands to showcase products and enables users to make purchases without ever leaving Facebook. The new section will reportedly include ‘Buy’ buttons, in part thanks to a joint collaboration with Shopify.

This is a massive opportunity for businesses — Facebook has voiced that nearly half of its users come to the platform actively searching for products. This could also assist many small businesses in cutting down operation costs associated with running and maintaining a smoothly functioning retail website.

Showcasing Services
Similar to the ‘Shopping’ tab, Facebook will also sweeten up business pages with the addition of a ‘Services’ section. This will help to boost service-based business’ products to a more tangible level and generate audience awareness of the services and features.

While it is still less likely for individuals to purchase services as opposed to products over Facebook, this nonetheless creates an enormous opportunity for service providers to curtail sales cycles. And in conjunction with the aforementioned CTAs, potential customers are now able to contact your business about the services more easily than ever before.

Understanding Foot Traffic
Along with the new features added to business pages, Facebook is helping out local brick and mortar stores through the expansion of Page Insights. Here, a new tab is made available that assists businesses in understanding its local foot traffic and local trends by utilizing user app locations to recognize when your neighborhoods are most active.

Retailers can now view how many of Facebook’s users are were within 150, 450, and 1,500 feet of the business location in addition to the ability to see age, gender, and if a person is a resident or a tourist. In the blog post announcing the augmented insights, it was stated that, “Now, for the first time, advertisers can see the percentage of people nearby who have seen their ad, helping them understand how well their ads are reaching their potential customers. Over time, this new metric can also help advertisers draw a connection between reaching a larger percentage of people nearby and accomplishing the business outcomes they care about.”

Location-Specific Ads
Following up on 2014’s introduction of local awareness ads, Facebook will now offer location specific ads for brands that operate multiple locations. This will allow businesses to simplify targeting efforts and grants the ability to select specific store locations for any and all ads. Now people who are near any given store will be supplied with the establishment’s name, address, and a call-to action that will supply directions or the phone number. These new ads will be highly beneficial for any business with more than one destination.

Facebook vice-president of monetization product marketing Matt Idema commented on both of these local optimization tools by saying, “These [products] are both ways for businesses with the insights product to understand the state of foot traffic around their [stores] and give them an opportunity to see how their ad campaigns affect that foot traffic. In addition to the ads being locally relevant, the way that the ads get delivered to people in the system will also be delivered locally.”

While these tools will certainly boost profits and revenue for Facebook itself, businesses all over the country can be winners too; especially those who are optimized for mobile. As Facebook continues its transformation from a social platform to a “lifestyle platform,” more and more features will be added for businesses to positively impact sales, awareness, and brand loyalty. All you have to do is use them. The tools are at your fingertips.

What Retailers Can Learn From the Online Dating World

Image courtesy of (Stuart Miles)/ FreeDigitalPhotos.net

The world of love could teach retailers a thing or two about how to put the passion back into customer relationships.

Think about it. A successful online dating site adapts quickly to customer preferences, serving up better and better matches all the time. Weak matches, reintroduction to propositions that have previously been rejected, and failure to separate engaged users from passive lurkers are big turn-offs to the dynamic dater. The same is true for disillusioned consumers, who yearn to be recognized by stores and brands as unique individuals yet are often left feeling disappointed.

The key to keeping prospects hot under the collar and coming back for more is in the way online dating companies manage and use data. Currently there is a sizeable gulf between how online dating companies and retailers do this.

“There are two sides to it. The first is analytics – understanding who customers are, how they’re socially connected and their past choices along with additional insights, and deriving some rules that can be used to predict future behavior,” explains Rik van Bruggen, regional director at Neo Technology, a company that specializes in analyzing complex data relationships.

“This is crucial in online dating, but is something that’s often still lacking in retail. Although companies might look at purchasing data and perhaps some behavioral and social data, generally this is very limited.”

The second challenge is the applying all of this analysis in real time, van Bruggen says. “In online dating, it’s poor form to recommend a potential partner the customer rejected yesterday. Equally, if someone’s just bought an Xbox, you don’t want to serve up PS4 promotions. If you can’t react to the data quickly enough, it’s worthless.”

\
Plotting for Passion
Neo specializes in ‘graph’ database systems, which let companies quickly identify very subtle patterns across multiple different data sources (digital leaders such as Google and LinkedIn are committed users of the technology). A good graph database can query and display numerous connections between people, preferences, personal profile criteria, and so on, allowing highly targeted content and insights to be served up at high speed to the user.

One major U.S. retailer, which doesn’t want be named, is now replacing its existing e-commerce platform with a graph database – as a means of creating event-driven offers and promotions based on classes, hierarchies, and user activity in real time.

This differs from its current model “where promotions were tied to specific products with significant latency in publication and very little development flexibility,” the retailer says. The company regularly handles 400-plus active promotions, and has 1.5 million products in its catalog. The idea is that in future, every time a user accesses a page on the retailer’s web site, the graph database system will handle the request and serve up appropriate promotions (during browsing and at checkout).
Sporting goods brand Adidas is more public about its use of graph database technology, which it will ultimately use to build a recommendation engine, offering up relevant, real-time suggestions to shoppers on adidas.com as well as via its social and mobile channels.

Currently, these kinds of advances are the exception rather than the norm.

“Social network analysis has been gaining a lot of traction,” van Bruggen notes. “Most retailers have ‘Like’ and ‘Tweet’ buttons, which could deliver insights. If you ‘Like’ something or someone, it creates the possibility for a brand or retailer to request additional profile information from Facebook to enhance their social analysis. Although this sort of thing is starting to become more mainstream, at the moment it isn’t real time. It often results in an email which could end up in your spam folder, or a voucher produced in advance to print at the checkout. In the future, this kind of activity needs to be more instantaneous.”

Love is All Around
Even online dating companies are feeling the pressure to create a keener sense of immediacy. Tinder, the mobile app, uses location-based data to serve up matches in the moment based on where people are. This has taken dating to a new level, challenging traditional online dating sites. Although Tinder strips some of the science of dating matches back to basics, one of the advantages is that it dispenses with laborious form-filling — giving users a quick fix of what they need in real time.

Mobile engagement specialist Urban Airship calls it dating ‘gamification,’ an approach retailers can also learn from. “The buzz around online dating now is all about catching people ‘in the moment’ and making a difference to your life right now,” explains Nigel Arthur, managing director of Urban Airship in the U.K.

Tinder might look simple, but there is still a lot of real-time analytics going on at the back end. “Dating is serious, intimate. Users don’t want to have their time wasted; they’re looking for a good match,” he says.

It’s the same with retail. “If I’m a Dad of two boys, don’t send me offers on princess outfits. If you do this via e-mail, it’s annoying. If it’s via mobile, people are much less forgiving: they’ll just close and delete the app and go elsewhere.”

Urban Airship’s retail customers include Asda and Shop Direct. “They’re doing some very smart work segmenting back-end data,” Arthur says. Grocery superstore chain Asda, owned by Wal-Mart, is using rich customer data to serve up high-impact, visually exciting promotional content to customers via its mobile app -to create a buzz around activity and goods in its physical stores and improve foot-fall. “The key, as in the dating world, is to bring something fresh the user hasn’t seen before, and for it to be timely and in context. If you’re going to interrupt me on my mobile, it had better be good.”

For dating apps, it’s as important to refresh the app features as well as the content – to keep customers coming back, and to keep emerging competitors at bay. Tinder recently added a ‘super like’ option that can only be used once a day, for example.

Retailers, meanwhile, have some catching up to do. Marks & Spencer, another of Urban Airship’s customers, is only at the early stages of deeper mobile engagement, Arthur notes.

But there are exceptions. Although not a retailer in the traditional sense, Starbucks has got a lot right, he says. “They’re a global customer of ours, and they use some lovely content to develop habitual app usage.” Every Tuesday, for example, customers can download a free song, book or app via their Starbucks mobile app. “It’s almost the Holy Grail of where companies need to be.” (One happy customer blogs about the Starbucks experience here.)

Recognizing ‘the one’
One challenge the retail sector faces over and above those faced by online dating companies is how to bring physical stores more completely into the new data-driven experience. Asda and Tesco are making headway, but the majority are a long way from a single, joined-up approach to on- and offline customer engagement.

“It’s about connecting everything together,” explains Lothar Krause, VP of global advisory services at Sociomantic Labs in Berlin, which specializes in data-driven analytics. “So if you’re in a shoe store and they don’t have your size, you can check their online inventory and be given a code – something that connects you as a shopper in the store with the person looking online.”

This more rounded profile can then help retailers lure shoppers into stores — identifying where they are, using location-based information from their mobile phone, so that they can issue instantaneous offers to get them through the door.

Ultimately it’s about innovation — leading rather than a following, and winning customers’ hearts by providing the best match for all of their desires. What’s not to love?
