How to Improve Team-Building Attitudes

Team building is an important part of any company, as people must know how to work together for the greater good of the organization. However, just because people can work together doesn't mean they know how to do so effectively. This is where a focus on improving team-building attitudes can be helpful. Teaching your employees how to re-focus their attitudes to work together might just mean greater success on future team projects and an overall sense of harmony in the workplace.

Suggestions

  1. Provide complete information about the project. One of the reasons that team attitudes might sour on a particular project is if some---but not all---team members have complete information. The more straightforward you can be about a project with all members of the team, the more successful the team will be working together because no one is left out of the information chain.
  2. Stress the importance of the total team over individuals for project success. The more that you can encourage the group; the more they will begin to think of themselves in a positive manner. Make it clear from the outset that there is no chance of success without a solid team structure in place. Stress this repeatedly throughout the project so that everyone gets on board with the team mentality.
  3. Conduct team-building exercises. Because it can get stressful working in a team, break the ice by conducting fun exercises meant to help the teamwork together, but in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. For example, you might have them do some relay games at a nearby park or play some board games right there in the office, where they have to learn to rely on each other in a less-stressful manner. The more you get the team members invested in one another, the better their attitudes will be towards the team and the project.
  4. Establish roles early on in the team-building process. Another stressor in a team environment occurs when people begin to step on each other's toes -- professionally speaking. However, if everyone has a role to play and they know what they role is, they can be much more content in the team structure. Everyone wants to feel like they have a part to play and they want to know that part is important. You give them that confidence when you establish a set reason for their presence on the team.
