Facebook users may not have been happy about having to download Messenger to send PMs via mobile — but they did it anyway.
Facebook Messenger was the No. 1 free app download of 2014, according to the list Apple released today of the year’s top app downloads.

- No. 4 — Facebook
- No. 5 — Instagram
- No. 6 — Pandora (free music)
- No. 7 — Google Maps
- No. 8 — Flipagram
- No. 9 — Spotify
- No. 10 — Numbers game, 2048.
Apple’s choice for best iPhone app of the year was brain training game Elevate while photo editor Pixelmator was given the best new iPad app title.

- No. 4 — Skype
- No. 5 — Microsoft Word
- No. 6 — Facebook Messenger

The top paid iPhone app was Head’s Up, the trivia game developed by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres while the ever-popular Minecraft (its pocket edition) was the top downloaded paid iPad app.
