The Supreme Court threw out the $399-million penalty an appeals court had handed the South Korean company. The appeals court had ruled the penalty was to compensate Apple for alleged infringement of the California company’s iPhone design.
The new ruling, however, said Samsung should not have to pay the iPhone maker damages based on the profits of the Smartphone as a whole but, rather, only for one component. The Supreme Court then remanded the case back to a lower court to determine the new penalty.
The case began back in 2011 when Apple brought a lawsuit against Samsung for violating a handful of patents.
A jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages in August of 2012, but that amount has been reduced over the years in response to a Samsung appeal. Apple, at the time, asked U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to augment the damages by $536 million. Samsung, however, said the damages should be chopped by more than $600 million.
It is not known if the case will be sent back to Koh’s court.
