A major hack against JP Morgan & Chase and other companies has resulted in three men being indicted in connection to the cybercrime.

Gery Shalon, Joshua Samuel Aaron and Ziv Orenstein, all from Israel, have been charged in connection to the crimes that targeted a handful of financial service businesses and even media outlets. The trio have 23 charges against them in the crimes that began as far back as 2007.

“By any measure, the data breaches at these firms were breathtaking in scope and in size,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said at a press conference in Manhattan, reported Reuters.

The crimes resulted in the personal information of more than 100 million people being compromised.
Prosecutors allege the trio carried out a hacking and fraud exercise that included pumping up stock prices, online casinos and even money laundering.

NBC News reported the hacking of JPMorgan’s computers compromised information in 83 million household and small business accounts. That makes it one of the largest information breaches in history.

“It is hacking in support of a diversified criminal conglomerate,” said Bharara. “In short, it is hacking as a business model.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate and working with various companies impacted.

“We continue to cooperate with law enforcement in fighting cybercrime,” JPMorgan spokeswoman Trish Wexler said in a statement to Bloomberg.

How to Hack Your Smart Phone

Since smart phones have become en vogue over the last decade, the potential to hack--or "jailbreak"--them has grown in popularity also. Doing so allows users to perhaps access certain applications--or "apps"--they otherwise might not be able to with their smart phone provider. For hackers, meanwhile, it provides a way to ascertain certain information. Whatever the reason, there are ways to go about hacking select smart phones.

Things You'll Need

  • laptop with wireless connectivity
  • three smart phones

Instructions

  1. Send an SMS message to the smart phone in question using a separate phone. For instance, hackers have sent graphics to other phones in the past that simply said "You have been hacked," to display how easy this is.
  2. After sending the SMS, run an application on the hacked phone to retrieve information from it. After doing so, an SMS should come back to the hacking phone with the hacked phone's INSI number--its unique ID. Once this is retrieved, anything can be pulled from the hacked phone, such as a contact list and personal information stored on the phone
  3. Change the control settings of the hacked phone. By unchecking the SSL, this will leave the phone vulnerable to hacks, as it will no longer have any encryption. Then run a wipe command, which will sweep the hacked phone and pull all information from it, then send it to the hacking phone. This is a separate way to hack a smart phone from steps 1 and 2, and can be done independently from those two steps.

Tips

  • To properly hack a phone, it's best to have a thorough knowledge of smart phone software and SMS functionality. If this is not the case, find someone who does have this knowledge, as it will be necessary to properly hack a smart phone.
  • Swiping a smart phone, then hacking it to ascertain information, is a crime. Hacking one's own phone to access info is okay. However, doing so to a person who has no knowledge of this is against the law, and can open you up to criminal investigation and prosecution.

How to Fix a Hacked Computer

Hacking is a term used to describe a situation in which someone accesses files on your computer without your permission. If you suspect your computer has been hacked, it's likely that it was not fully protected. Unprotected computers allow hackers to gain control and ultimately take over the system. Hackers don't care who you are or where you're from. They just want access to your computer and files.

Things You'll Need

  • Operating system installation disk

Instructions

  1. Determine whether your computer was hacked. Signs of a hacked computer include, but are not limited to, a suddenly slow processor, changed settings, a decrease in Internet access speed, Internet activity when you have not used the Internet or problems with many tasks and processes that run on your computer.
  2. Complete a clean installation. Install your operating system again. Disconnect all cameras, printers, scanners, tablets and any other hardware (not including your keyboard and mouse). Disconnect your computer from the Internet. Follow the instructions that came with your manual to complete a clean installation.
  3.  Follow all instructions on your computer's security center to keep your computer up to date. Install all updates for your computer when they become available. Enable automatic updates, if possible.
  4. Download and install a firewall, anti-virus program and anti-spyware and anti-malware programs before connecting to the Internet again.
  5. Change all passwords on your computer, including passwords used to access websites on the Internet. Be sure that guest accounts are disabled. Disable file sharing so that hackers cannot access files.
