How to Configure Internet Key Exchange Security Protocol

The Internet Key Exchange Security Protocol is used alongside Internet Protocol Security, or IPSec, the standard for increased security features such as encryption and authentication. Internet Key Exchange, which is a combination of the Oakley and Skeme key exchange protocols, provides additional protection for data transferred between connected computers. Configure Internet Key Exchange Security Protocol on your Windows Server to ensure data flows between computers are protected. IKE is completely configurable to match any network's needs.

Suggestions

  1. Select "Start" and type "MMC" in the search box.
  2. Press "Enter" or select "OK.Select the "File" menu and choose "Add/Remove Snap-In."
  3. Select "Add."
  4. Choose "IP Security Policy Management."
  5. Press "Add."
  6. Choose the computer on which you want to configure the Internet Key Exchange Security Protocol. Choose from the local computer, Active Directory domain, a different Active Directory domain or a different computer.
  7. Press "Finish," choose "Close" and select "OK."
  8. Double-click the IPSec policy you want to change.
  9. Select "Settings" from the "General" tab.
  10. Choose one of the following settings:
    "Master key perfect forward secrecy (PFS)" -- This setting re-authenticates users every time a new session key is needed.
    "Authenticate and generate a new key after every number minutes" -- Select a set number of minutes for the server to wait to re-authenticate users.
    "Authenticate and generate a new key after every number sessions" -- Select how many times a single key can be reused before re-authentication.
    "Methods" -- Choose advanced settings and special requirements.
     
  11. Press "Apply" to apply the settings.

  12. Press "OK" to exit the key configuration window.



Tips

  • IKE can also be configured outside of a server. Cisco provides a complete guide to configuring IKE with command line prompts (see Resources).
  • Only members of the Domain Admins group can edit policies within Active Directory.

    Different Security Protocols

    Communications over the Internet should always be secured in terms of privacy and confidentiality. Internet communications are delivered by packets through a network. These packets are easy for attackers to intercept if they have exploited the vulnerabilities of the network and intruded upon it.     IPSec Protocols

    • One of the drawbacks of the original Internet protocol is its lack of general technique for protecting the confidentiality and privacy of data as it is transferred through the Internet. Information sent over the Internet can be intercepted and may even potentially be altered. Security improvements are urgently needed for Internet protocol. IPSec is designed to meet this security requirement. IPSec provides security services for other TCP/IP security protocols and applications to utilize. When two end-user hosts need to communicate securely, they set up a secure route between themselves. The two hosts use a security protocol of which both of hosts approve and understand. The hosts also utilize a certain encryption method to encrypt data transferred between them.

     

    Simple Network Management Protocol

    • The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) specification enables secured network management activities by various security protocols. The SNMP ensures the security of information in terms of data integrity, authentication and confidentiality. It is a security protocol that helps the exchange of management information between network devices. It is also part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. SNMP allows network administrators to monitor network performance and identify and mitigate network issues. SNMP comprises three essential components including management devices such as routers; switches; and network management systems.
    • Wireless networks utilize radio broadcasts, which mean anyone with a receiver can obtain communications over the network. The information dissemination can be received and misused by malicious users. Early wireless network security is ensured by WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) protocol, which encrypts the traffic. However, it is vulnerable to attacks based on decrypting traffic, Therefore the WPA 2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption protocol was developed and is widely used today.
