How to Design Shoes for Women

Women's shoes come in a variety of styles, which makes designing shoes for women an exciting project that can be a lifelong endeavor. They are fun to design because of all the possibilities in heel heights, colors, patterns and fabrics. With some imagination and a few key style choices, anyone can design shoes for women that are distinctive, beautiful and desirable.

Suggestions

  1. Choose a basic style for the shoe. Women's shoes come in a variety of styles including open toe, closed toe, round toe pumps and sleek toe pumps, boots, booties, wedges, slides, loafers, slippers and mary janes. Grab a sketchbook and draw a preliminary design of the shoe.
  2. Decide on a type of heel. You can choose from platforms, stilettos, kitten heels, or chunky heels. Also, decide how high you'd like the heel to be. Heel heights are usually measured in inches. Of course, you can also design a shoe that is flat with no heel.
  3.   Choose a color or pattern for your shoe. You can pick a solid color or a combination of two or more colors. You can also choose patterns like stripes, polka dots, or a floral motif.
  4. Choose material for the shoe. There are many different types of materials a woman's shoe can be made from including leather, patent leather, cloth, suede, Lucite, denim and imitation leather or other synthetic materials. The type of fabric you choose is important because it gives the shoe a style and personality all its own.
  5. Decide if you'd like any embellishments on the shoe. You can decorate shoes with beads, embroidery, tassels, studs, spikes, or appliques. Embellishments give the shoes for women more personality and flair.
  6. Finally, decide on the type of straps or closures for the shoe. You can have one strap that wraps around the ankle, two long straps that wind around the ankle, a zipper that closes up in the back or no straps at all. Finish sketching your design.
