Using Grammarly to Polish Your Content

I’ll admit it. Even though I’m an English major at a great university, grammar has never been my thing.

Embarrassing, I know.

Unfortunately for me, and for thousands of small business owners, having impeccable grammar is an absolute must if you want the professional world to take you seriously.

In fact, it is so important that Michel de Montaigne once said, “The greater part of the world’s troubles are due to questions of grammar.”

But, don’t worry if you don’t remember anything from your high school English class.
You can use Grammarly to check your work before you publish it. That way you will be seen as the professional you are.

Getting started

Visit the Grammarly website and sign up for a free 7-day trial account.

Select how you will use Grammarly and you’re ready to go.

Although Grammarly is not a free service, it is low-cost. You can purchase any of three payment plans following a 7-day free trial:
  • Monthly- $29.95/month
  • Quarterly- $19.98/month
  • Annual-$11.66/month

To begin, either upload a document or write a new document and Grammarly will check as you write.
After you’ve fixed your grammar mistakes, either download or copy the new document.
You can also clarify the type of document Grammarly is editing to allow for more accurate detection by selecting from the following categories:
  • General
  • Academic
  • Business
  • Technical
  • Medical
  • Creative
  • Casual

At any time, click on the “home button” to bring you to your edited documents.

Editing with Grammarly

Grammarly will catch mistakes that Microsoft Word can’t, which is incredibly useful for any small business owner.

It instantly checks over 250 grammar rules.

In addition, it checks for plagiarism by checking your document against eight billion webpages. If your text is unoriginal, Grammarly suggests citations for you.

Grammarly also provides explanations for each mistake to allow you to improve your grammar on your own.

Furthermore, Grammarly alerts you when words are used incorrectly, even if they are spelled correctly. Think “their” vs. “there” vs. “they’re.”

Grammarly also edits for style. It tells you if you are overusing a certain word, or if there is another word that would work better in context.

It has extensive proofreading in seven areas:
  1. Contextual spelling
  2. Grammar
  3. Punctuation
  4. Sentence structure
  5. Style
  6. Vocabulary use
  7. Plagiarism

Finally, if you want your work checked by a live editor, rather than Grammarly, you can send it for proofreading for a small fee.
  • Back in 30 min – $0.08 per word
  • Back in 3 hours- $0.04 per word
  • Back in 24 hours- $0.02 per word

After a proofread by Grammarly, you can feel confident about presenting your work.

What if you’re on a strict shoestring budget?

If you can’t afford Grammarly just yet, don’t worry.
