How to Find Hidden Files on Your Computer

Some websites that you visit on a daily basis store hidden files on your computer that are used for tracking your Internet movements. This allows malicious websites to learn what your interests are and to spy on you. They can even get your personal information by following you around through this little hidden tracking file. Always check your computer for secret hidden files that need to be removed from your computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows program
  • Virus removal program
 

Instructions

  1. Right-click the "Start" button.
  2. Click on the "Explore" optionClick on the "View" option.
  3. Scroll down and click the "Customize this folder" option. The files folder window will open.
  4. Click the "General" tab at the top of the page. Make sure that the "Hidden" option beside the "Attributes" is unchecked. Go back to the main window.
  5. Click the "Tools" tab at the top of the window. Scroll down and click the "Folder options" and a new window will appear.
  6. Click the "View" tab at the top of the window. Scroll down the list and check the "Show hidden files" option under the "Hidden files and folders" section. Also uncheck the "hide extensions" and click the "apply" button at the bottom of the window.
  7. Go back to the main "Explore" window and go through all of your computer programs and find any and all hidden files. To remove these hidden files, you will need to delete the program and then run your computer's antivirus program.


Tip

  • Keep an updated antivirus program installed on your computer.
