Instructions
- Decide whether your account has been hacked. Some signs that your account was hacked include being unable to log in with your password, having friends receive emails from you that you never sent and being logged out due to being "logged in at another location."
- Click on "reset password" or "forgot password" near the sign-in button on your email provider's website.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Some providers will have asked for secret questions when you signed up for your account. If so, answer those questions and confirm information such as your birth date to change the password. Some providers have a link to click if you believe someone else is using your account. This link will usually ask for similar information to confirm your identity. Enter all requested information.
- Create a new password. Do not use any form of your old password. If your old password was "password," do not use "password123" as your new password. Include letters and numbers and even symbols if allowed. For example, "pass;w0rd" is much more secure than "password," due to the symbol and number use. Make sure the password is memorable, because you should NOT write it down or tell a friend what your password is.
- Send an email to all of your contacts. Let them know that your account was hacked, and if they received any emails with attachments from you recently, they should not open them. Often, hacked email accounts are used to send mass emails containing viruses. Your friends likely trust you and will open an email from you unless you warn them ahead of time.
