Word of mouth marketing (WOMM) relies on customers sharing their opinions in a public forum. The Internet has increased the exposure that companies can get by using word of mouth marketing. Through the use of emails, blogs, news pages and discussion boards, companies can use their existing, loyal customer base to promote their products on the Internet.
Emails
Emails allow a company to craft a message interesting or informative enough to inspire its customers to pass the information on to others in their address book. They also provide a way to keep a business’ customer base informed about new products, relevant news or new incentives, such as product sales or the launch of a referral program.
Blogs
Blogs contribute to word of mouth marketing in numerous ways. First, blogging software such as Blogger.com and wordpress.com do not require special programming knowledge, so even the most technically challenged business owner or employee can post a blog and tap into the Internet market. Second, because blogs are intended to be posted regularly, they help increase a business' exposure by providing new content for Internet search engines to comb through. Third, blogging gives the company control over the marketing content because the company chooses what topics to post. Fourth, blogging encourages customers to leave feedback by submitting comments that are then viewable by everyone who reads the blog.
Discussion Boards
Like blogging, discussion boards help develop relationships between the business and the customer. Discussion boards foster a sense of community by providing a forum for people with similar interests to meet over time and talk about their shared interests. A business can capitalize on the format by providing an initial topic with relevant information that encourages customers to leave comments or ask questions.
News Pages
In addition to a company’s press releases, a news page can provide links to other web pages that provide information on the company’s products or services. A company can link to blogs, news feeds or any website with relevant information. For example, if an industry magazine posts a favorable product review, then the company would provide a link to the article on its news page. Or, if a customer has a personal blog and posts a recommendation for the company’s services, then the company could provide a link to the customer’s blog.
