How to Answer Interrogation Questions at a Trial

Testifying in a trial can be nerve-wracking and intimidating for many, but proper preparation is an invaluable help. It will prevent you from freezing on the stand or becoming too talkative. If you review the facts of the case and your version of events, as well as keep a few basic principles in mind, you will respond to interrogation questions calmly and confidently.

Suggestions

  1. Speak loudly and clearly. When answering "Yes" or "No," don't nod or shake your head. Say the words.
  2. Be honest. You've sworn an oath to tell the truth, and perjury is a serious offense.
  3. Be respectful. You don't want to end up in jail for contempt of court.
  4. Don't give excess information. Answer the question fully and honestly, but don't elaborate. Giving too much information often confuses the issue and keeps you on the stand longer than necessary.
  5. Ask for clarification if you don't understand the question. Taking your best guess at what the question means can lead to misunderstandings and faulty assumptions.
  6. Admit that you don't remember something, if your memory is foggy. Trying to piece together an incomplete memory can cause you to give inaccurate information.
  7. Give your answers in your own words. State the facts, not your opinions or conclusions.
