How to Become a Sports Agent for the NBA

NBA sports agents are responsible for looking out for their client's best interests financially. Agents are responsible for negotiating their client's contracts--with their team and other business opportunities. Agents also might perform public-relations duties and provide financial and investment advice. NBA agents are subject to certification by the league.

Suggestions

  1. Enroll in sports-management courses. Coursework is not required--but the classes will provide insight into the many responsibilities of a sports agent. Many universities and educational programs offer courses in sports management.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the NBA certification requirements. A degree from a four-year university is required to become certified, along with a completed application and the appropriate fee ($1,500 for July 1 to June 30, $850 for Jan. 1 to June 30).
  3. Complete the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) agent application. Within 30 days, an applicant will be notified of their certification. This process can be extended for 90 days upon written notification to the applicant.
  4. Network and meet potential clients. The success of an agent depends on your roster. Referrals can be made through business relationships, college friendships, or a random encounter.
