Suggestions
- Have a business plan in place. Before you launch your family law practice, create a detailed business plan that outlines the financial aspects of your businesses, as well as specific goals for how you plan to grow and manage you law firm.
- Participate in professional development programs. In addition to the continuing legal education courses you're required to complete in order to maintain bar membership, seek out extra training and symposiums offered by the ABA and your state's bar association.
- Network with other family law practitioners. Join voluntary family law bar associations and develop business relationships with family law mediators, court employees and other attorneys. They can be a valuable source for referrals and give you a sounding board for ideas on how to build your successful family law practice.
- Focus your practice on your clients. The primary goal of your professional development and networking should be to create a family law practice that meets your clients' needs. Implement your skills and knowledge by developing policies and best-practices for client communications.
- Understand the nature of your law practice. Since you will be dealing with sensitive issues such as divorce, child custody and adoptions as a family practitioner, strive to meet the clients' emotional needs in addition to providing them with accurate, reliable legal advice.
