How to Set Up a Legal Practice for Wills

As assets grow, estate planning has become more complex. While a simple will may still work for a number of people, a more in-depth property examination and estate preparation has become necessary for many others. These types of estate plans require the services of a qualified attorney. Whether starting an estate planning practice from scratch or incorporating the area into an existing practice, a successful venture takes time, the right associations and the proper continuing education.

Join an existing practice or establish your own solo practice depending on your skills. Consult your local bar association for information on law office management and opening a law practice.
Learn the craft. While law school may have taught the basics of wills and estate planning, the needs of real world clients can be very different. Each state bar association offers continuing legal education in different areas of law. Choose the seminar that best fits with your experience level, and attend the annual update each year or order the materials to study on your own.
Join useful organizations. If you are not already a member, join your state and local bar associations. These associations are not only good ways to network for clientele, but also a good avenue for shared knowledge. Most attorneys are more than willing to answer questions from new attorneys. Join any estate planning organizations that your state or local bar association offers.
Build a client base. Utilize any clients you already have who may be using your legal services for something other than estate law. Send a letter to all existing clients letting them know that you offer will preparation as part of your services, and encourage them to consider an estate plan. Offer seminars on estate planning subjects to local groups, and coordinate with insurance providers or financial planners to offer a complete estate planning opportunity.
Advertise. Reevaluate all of your advertising, including letterhead and business cards. Make sure than any phonebook, television and online ads include wills, probate and estate planning.
Become board-certified in the area of estate planning through your state bar association in order to advertise yourself as an estate planning specialist.
