How to Find Hidden Files on an External Hard Drive

Files stored on external hard drives may be "hidden." These files are hidden in the hard drive so that they cannot be viewed or deleted accidentally. To access the hidden files, the "Show hidden files, folders and drives" option must be turned on. This is done through the "Folder" options.

Instructions

  1. Plug all necessary cables that require the hard drive to function. If your external hard drive requires power, plug its power adapter into an outlet. Plug the drive's USB cable into the computer's USB port. The Autoplay screen appears on the computer screen.
  2. Click the "View Folder" option inside the Autoplay screen.
  3. Click "Organize" at the top of the screen, then click "Folder and search options."
  4. Click the "View" tab. Click "Show hidden files, folders and drives" under "Hidden files and folders." Click "Apply," then "OK.'
  5. Locate the hidden files. The icons of all hidden files are transparent. To open a hidden file, double-click it.
