How to Hide Money From Your Spouse

Indeed, marriage is a relationship based upon trust. That doesn’t mean that you won’t need to keep some secrets from time to time. Even though you said, “I do,” you still have to have your own supply of money. Perhaps you want to buy your spouse a birthday gift. Maybe your spouse isn’t very good with money, and the only way for you to get the kitchen remodeled is to stow some money away in secret. Here are some ways to hide money from your loved one.

Some Suggestions

  1. Hide it the old-fashioned way: conceal a stack of cash somewhere in or around your home. Pick out a book that you know your spouse would never want to read. Slide bills in between the pages and place the book back on the shelf. If your spouse hasn’t cooked in a very long time, it’s probably safe to wrap your cash in a plastic bag and stow it in the flour jar.
  2. Lock the cash away. There are more advanced ways to hide money around your home in such a way that your spouse won’t find it. You can get a safe or a metal box and lock the money inside. It’s harder to hide a safe than a few bills, but if your spouse discovers it, he will need power tools to get at the money inside.
  3.  Consult a trusted family member or friend and ask them to hold the money for you. This can be risky, as there’s little to stop your loved one from simply taking your money. You’ll have to choose wisely.
  4. Invest the money in such a way that your spouse won’t find out. If you have a family financial planner, you’ll have to visit another one to keep the new investment out of your portfolio and under the radar. It might not be a good idea to buy stocks or complicated investments with this money, as it might not be a long-term deal. Stick with investments that are easily converted to cash.
  5. Save small amounts incrementally over a long period of time. This is easier to hide than a large chunk of money. Open your own bank account (not in your regular bank, of course) and deposit a comfortable amount every week until you have the total you need.
