How to Hide Computer Files So Others Can't View Them

The Windows operating system allows you to hide files and folders that you want to keep private. The "Hide" feature works for both files and folders. Instructing your computer not to show any hidden files or folders makes the selected files and folders invisible to a search of your computer's hard drive.

Instructions

  1. Bring up the "Explore" function to see the list of files and folders on your computer's hard drive.
  2. Right-click on the file or folder you want to hide.
  3.  Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
  4. Check the box labeled "Hidden" at the bottom of the pop-up file menu.
  5. Click "Apply," then click "OK" to hide the file or folder.
  6. Go to the View menu at the top of any window that's open on your computer screen.
  7. Select "Folder Options."
  8. Check "Do Not Show Hidden or System Files" to make all hidden files and folders invisible to a computer hard drive search.

Tips

  • The above process works on Windows operating systems Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP.
  • What's done can be undone. Anyone with the know-how can reverse your privacy efforts and reveal the hidden files. You may need an encryption program for stronger protection.
